About the artist

Mac DeMarco, the Canadian multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, has built a reputation for his laid-back, lo-fi sound and offbeat charm. His music is often described as "slacker rock," characterised by its mellow vibe, jangly guitars, and a blend of humour and introspection. DeMarco’s rise to fame began with his earlier releases, Rock and Roll Night Club and 2, but it was Salad Days that truly solidified his place in the indie music scene.

On the turntable

Salad Days, Mac DeMarco's second full-length album, released in April 2014, captures a pivotal moment in the artist’s career. The album title itself is a nod to the "salad days" of youth—a time of naivety and simplicity, which DeMarco explores with both fondness and a sense of inevitable loss. Written and recorded entirely by DeMarco in his Brooklyn apartment, Salad Days reflects the weariness of a young artist coming to terms with the pressures of life and the fleeting nature of youth.

The album opens with the title track, setting the tone with a melancholic acknowledgment of growing older and the accompanying disillusionment. This theme of reflection and the passing of time permeates the album, from the regretful musings of "Brother" to the nostalgic "Let My Baby Stay," which deals with the fear of losing something precious.

Salad Days also stands out musically, with DeMarco’s signature jangly guitar tones and lo-fi production techniques giving the album a warm, analog feel. Tracks like "Passing Out Pieces" showcase his use of tape machines and vintage gear, creating a sound that is both imperfect and deeply personal. The album’s standout track, "Chamber of Reflection," departs from the rest of the record with its synth-driven melody and introspective lyrics, offering a moment of quiet contemplation amid the otherwise upbeat sound.

Critically acclaimed for its honesty and craftsmanship, Salad Days was a commercial success, debuting at number 30 on the Billboard 200, marking DeMarco’s highest charting release at the time. The album's themes of growing up, facing regrets, and navigating the complexities of life struck a chord with listeners, making it a defining work in DeMarco’s discography.
